Cutler tackles diabetes, Elway's legacy head-on

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) - Jay Cutler is refusing to be sacked by diabetes or John Elway's legacy. The Broncos' third-year pro is taking both challenges head-on. He's on pace to set a franchise record with more than 4,500 yards passing and also end Denver's two-year playoff drought even though the team is tormented by injuries that have sent 11 players to IR and five more starters to the sideline. Eight months after his diagnosis, Cutler is adroitly juggling the demands of diabetes with the pressures of being ``The Man'' in quarterback-crazy Colorado, where he raised eyebrows last month by saying he had a stronger arm than Elway, ``hands down.''

Giants O-Line: rushing for 200-plus yards the norm

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -When the New York Giants offensive linemen walked into their group meeting a day after gaining 207 yards against Ray Lewis and a Baltimore defense that was the best in the NFL against the run, they didn't start by patting each other on the back. That's not their style. Instead, they teased each other about missed blocks and other missteps before getting serious and talking about the topic that is seemingly always on their minds: How to improve after leading Brandon Jacobs and stable of running backs known as ``Earth, Wind and Fire'' to a third straight 200-yard rushing game, something the Giants had not done in more than half a century.

Jets-Titans offer early AFC showdown in Music City

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -The Tennessee Titans feel they aren't getting the attention and respect that usually go with a 10-0 start. They can change all that Sunday against the New York Jets . The NFL's last unbeaten team goes up against the AFC East-leading Jets (7-3) in what very well could be a playoff preview, with the winner taking a step toward home-field advantage come January.

Call him survivor or old QB, Collins still winning

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Kerry Collins may not be the NFL's best quarterback. He has a checkered personal history and a losing record as a starter. But here he is, gray stubble and all, a key reason the Tennessee Titans are the NFL's last unbeaten team with a franchise-best 10-0 mark. The fifth pick overall in 1995, Collins took his first team to the NFC championship game in his second season, and led the New York Giants to the 2001 Super Bowl. But he also had problems with alcohol and the behavior that went with drinking.

USDA report details more involvement for Vick

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Michael Vick put family pets in rings with pit bulls and thought it was funny watching the trained killers injure or kill the helpless dogs, a witness told federal investigators during the dogfighting investigation that brought Vick down. In a 17-page report filed Aug. 28, 2008, by case agent James Knorr of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and released Friday under the Freedom of Information Act, a person identified as confidential witness No. 1 said Vick placed pets in the ring against pit bulls owned by ``Bad Newz Kennels'' at least twice and watched as the pit bulls ``caused major injuries.'' The witness said Vick and co-defendants Purnell Peace and Quanis Phillips ``thought it was funny to watch the pit bull dogs belonging to Bad Newz Kennels injure or kill the other dogs.''

Panthers LB Beason fined $5,000 for facemask

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Carolina Panthers linebacker Jon Beason has been fined $5,000 by the NFL for grabbing Detroit Lions quarterback Daunte Culpepper by the facemask on a play that didn't result in a penalty. Beason stopped Culpepper on his tying 2-point conversion attempt midway through the fourth quarter on Sunday. Replays showed Beason grabbed Culpepper by the facemask and his head twisted. But there was no flag and the Panthers went on to win 31-22. A league spokesman said Friday night that Beason was fined for unnecessary roughness.

Line switch: Penalties help get Cook benched

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) -After struggling to stay still before the snap all season, Ryan Cook won't be moving much this week. After starting 29 straight games at right tackle for the Minnesota Vikings , Cook was benched this week in favor of versatile veteran Artis Hicks. ``I'm not happy that was the occurrence, but obviously I support Artis in whatever he's doing in his endeavors and I'll do the best I can to help out,'' Cook said.

Goodell: Economic bite may hit NFL harder in 2009

NEW YORK (AP) -As much as NFL teams are feeling a financial squeeze already, commissioner Roger Goodell fears the economic downturn really could hit the league in early 2009, when tickets for next season go on sale. ``There's no secret on sponsorship, advertising, licensing - those numbers are going to be impacted by the current climate. We're aware of that,'' Goodell said in an interview with The Associated Press on Friday. ``We're still, unfortunately, in the beginning stages of this. And most of our tickets are sold in the spring. And so '09 is going to be more of a barometer of how impactful the economic environment's going to be on the NFL.''

Portis limited in practice, listed as questionable

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) - Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis was limited in practice Friday with his sprained knee and is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks . Coach Jim Zorn said Portis will be a game-time decision, although Portis has given every indication that he will play. He ran for 68 yards on 15 carries in last week's game against the Dallas Cowboys despite not practicing at all. ``Clinton is game-time because he's really not full speed,'' Zorn said.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) - New York Jets rookie quarterback Erik Ainge was suspended four games by the NFL on Friday for violating the league's policy on steroids and related substances. Ainge, already on injured reserve and out for the season with a foot injury, is not allowed to be with the team or at its facility during the suspension. He'll be eligible to rejoin the team Dec. 15, following the Jets' game against Buffalo. ``We respect the league's decision and look forward to Erik's return,'' Jets spokesman Bruce Speight said.

Bankruptcy records detail Vick's lavish spending

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Michael Vick was once the NFL's highest-paid player, and he spent like it. One of his friends tools around in a $31,000 Cadillac DTS. His former personal assistant steers a $45,000 Infiniti M45 and has a pair of power boats. His brother Marcus has a $62,000 Land Rover and his sister a Yukon Denali. But Vick himself is busted, millions of dollars in debt and making 12 cents an hour in his job at the federal penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kan., where he serving a 23-month sentence on dogfighting charges.

Jets have legitimate shot at ending Titans' run

The New York Jets showed the nation last Thursday night that the acquisitions of Kris Jenkins , Alan Faneca and Brett Favre , among others, have made them legitimate playoff contenders. Their game Sunday in Tennessee may determine if they can be more than that. The Titans enter the contest 10-0, the NFL's only unbeaten team. The Jets, who lead the AFC East at 7-3, are the most formidable opponent they will face until the final two games of the regular season, when they host Pittsburgh, then finish at Indianapolis; Detroit, Cleveland and Houston are in between.

NFL: Pacman can practice Monday

IRVING, Texas (AP) -The NFL confirmed Friday that suspended cornerback Adam ``Pacman'' Jones can join the Dallas Cowboys on Monday and that he can play again Dec. 7 against Pittsburgh - but only if he stays on his best behavior.
WR Ocho Cinco back to work

CINCINNATI (AP)- Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Ocho Cinco was back at work Friday, a day after being sent home before the Pittsburgh game for disciplinary reasons. Coach Marvin Lewis wanted to move on from the latest Bengals controversy, and after the team fell to 1-9-1. The latest loss Thursday night against the Steelers was a 27-10 defeat in which the Bengals managed just 208 yards of offense. Lewis said the punishment fit the violation, and declined to go into details of the incident. Ocho Cinco was late for a team meeting Wednesday night, and then had a verbal altercation with a coach or coaches.

Knee injury sidelines Booker

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) - Chicago Bears receiver Marty Booker will miss the game at St. Louis on Sunday because of a knee injury. In his second stint with the Bears after spending the past four seasons with Miami, Booker has just 11 receptions for 183 yards and two touchdowns and has not caught a pass the past three games. His last reception was against Minnesota on Oct. 19. The Bears also ruled out offensive tackle Fred Miller (shoulder) and linebacker Darrell McClover (hamstring) for the Rams game. Defensive tackle Marcus Harrison (ankle), receiver Brandon Lloyd (calf) and linebacker Nick Roach (ankle) were listed as probable.

Jets' Harris, Smith ruled out vs. Titans

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) - New York Jets linebacker David Harris and safety Eric Smith will each miss their fourth straight game after they were ruled out Friday for the team's matchup at undefeated Tennessee because of injuries. Harris reportedly had surgery on his groin earlier this month after he was injured in the second quarter of the Jets' 28-24 victory over Kansas City on Oct. 26. Harris, who led the team with 52 tackles at the time he was injured, hasn't practiced the last several weeks and could miss another week.
Michael Vick back in Va. to face state charges

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Former NFL star Michael Vick is back in Virginia to plead guilty to state dogfighting charges, a move he hopes will expedite his return to society and, eventually, pro football. The former Atlanta Falcons quarterback is being held in protective custody at the Hopewell Regional Jail, superintendent Darnley Hodge said Friday. Vick arrived Thursday afternoon from the federal penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kan., where he's serving a 23-month sentence for a dogfighting conspiracy conviction. He was brought back by the Fugitive Unit of the Virginia State Police, which already had two other prisoners to pick up in the midwest, state police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said.

Fantasy football on target - Week 12

Opportunity in the NFL world can translate into success in the fantasy football world. This is where targets come into play. While a wide receiver may have caught only four passes in a given week, his target total might have been double or triple that. Those targets may not have translated into catches during one week, but they may in the future. The following players gained attention because of the number of targets they received in the past four weeks. Are some of these numbers a trend in the making or simply an aberration? Fantasy Football on Target Another 300-yard game from Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner, another monster game from wide receiver Anquan Boldin. The sixth-year receiver was a beast in Week 11, topping the weekly charts with 13 receptions for 186 yards. In addition to the positional production tables, he also sits atop the weekly target tally for all receivers and tight ends with 17 this past week. It's clear the Cards are going to be throwing the ball a t on, so you can expect the targets to be there for Boldin. However, his and Larry Fitzgerald's targets (14) came at the expense of wide receiver Steve Breaston, who managed just three targets after totaling 26 from Weeks 8 through 10. However, the Seattle Seahawks, Arizona's Week 11 opponent, have a horrible pass defense, so it is likely the top two receivers - Boldin and Fitzgerald - received more targets simply because they were open more often than in previous weeks. If the Cardinals face a tough pass D in the coming weeks, as they do in Week 12 against the New York Giants, Breaston could see his targets increase. If you are looking for a receiver poised for a big game, look no further than the Cleveland Browns' Braylon Edwards. Sure, it might not be a surprise as Edwards tied a career high with eight receptions (for 104 yards), but he was the target of 16 passes from Cleveland signal caller Brady Quinn; that tied him for second in the league last week. Cleveland fans could wonder what might h ave been if a few more of his passes hit Edwards. Next up on the list is the Kansas City Chiefs' Dwayne Bowe. Last week we touted the play of his teammate, Mark Bradley, and this week it is Bowe's turn. He caught seven passes for 53 yards and two touchdowns last week against the New Orleans Saints, but those totals came on the back of 16 targets, which was tied for the second most among wideouts in Week 11. Even more intriguing are Bowe's seven targets in the end zone, three more than the nearest NFL receiver. The Chiefs are clearly going to throw the ball more with quarterback Tyler Thigpen performing ably behind center, making this an encouraging sign for fantasy owners. The New England Patriots lost a thriller in overtime last Thursday. Patriots quarterback Matt Cassel threw for 400 yards and three touchdowns. Wide receiver Wes Welker led the way with seven receptions for 108 yards, yet he was tied for third on the team's list for targets. Wide receiver Jabar Gaffney was the recipient of 11 targets against the Jets, which he turned into seven receptions for 86 yards and one touchdown. However, don't read too much into those targets. How often is Cassel going to throw for 400 yards? Even if he does, Gaffney managed just 15 targets in the previous six games, so counting on him for a weekly performance isn't a good idea. For the second straight week, Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson caught four passes, this time for 66 yards. Yet, his production came about from 10 targets; he now has 10.6 per game over his last five games. Like Braylon Edwards, Jackson could be primed for a big game if he can turn some of those targets into on-field production. The Jacksonville Jaguars did a good job spreading the ball around last week; Jerry Porter finished with nine targets, Dennis Northcutt with seven and Mike Walker with six. However, they were up against a tough run defense, and there wasn't much available on the ground for their erratic rushing attack. They have another solid run defense on the docket (the Minnesota Vikings), which could mean another decent chance at targets for the wide receivers, especially if leading receiver Matt Jones (thigh) misses another game - either by injury or the NFL finally deciding to suspend him. Of the three listed above, Porter and Walker might be most worth a look. Both were slowed by injuries early in the year, and they could just be finally coming on. For the record, Porter turned his nine targets into just two receptions for 24 yards, Northcutt flipped his into two receptions for 28 yards and Walker turned his six into two receptions for 15 yards. There is room for improvement from each of the listed receivers. Now some quick points on wide receivers before m oving on to the tight ends: New Orleans Saints wide receiver Lance Moore caught eight passes for 102 yards and one touchdown last week, which was his third straight game with at least six receptions. It was also his third straight game with at least nine targets as he has totaled 32 in that stretch. The Saints love throwing the ball, and with Marques Colston still not looking like Marques Colston, Moore should continue to receive plenty of targets. The woeful St. Louis Rams were blown out for the third straight game. St. Louis scored just one touchdown in the game, a two-yard catch from wide receiver Dane Looker, giving him an unimpressive stat line of two catches for eight yards and one score. He received eight targets, however, which might be an encouraging sign if not for one important caveat. Seven of his eight targets came in the second half when the Rams were down 35-3. His only utilization in the first half resulted in a sack. The same holds true for Rams wideout De rek Stanley; just one of his six targets fell in the first half. It doesn't look as though the Rams are going to be competitive in many games the rest of the way, so they could play out the string with both Looker and Stanley seeing more time. Yet, banking on this could lead to a few disappointing fantasy outings. Sticking in the NFC West, the Seattle Seahawks welcomed back wide receiver Deion Branch (heel) from a five-week layoff, and he was rewarded for his persistence with a team-leading nine targets (including four in the red zone) in Week 11. The team should be more competent offensively with quarterback Matt Hasselbeck (back) behind center, which could pay off for any fantasy owners looking to take a chance on the oft-injured wideout. As for the other receivers in Seattle, Bobby Engram - one of Hasselbeck's favorite targets - received just three looks in Week 11 while Koren Robinson received seven. As with Branch, both should benefit from having Hasselbeck back, especially Engram, who was one of his favorite targets last year. Have teams been keying on Green Bay Packers wide receiver Greg Jennings? Outside of his 11-target game in Week 9, he was been targeted seven times or fewer in each of the surrounding four games. It's safe to say he has not been producing as he was earlier in this season. However, with a resurgent running game and quarterback Aaron Rodgers (shoulder) close to full health, Jennings - along with wideouts Donald Driver (six targets last week), Jordy Nelson (three) and James Jones (two) - could find more room to work. Keep in mind he scored a touchdown last week, anyway. Entering Week 11, New England Patriots tight end Benjamin Watson had registered just 14 targets from Week 7 to Week 10. With a strong matchup in his favor, Watson was targeted 14 times against the New York Jets. His matchup this week is only slightly worse, but it is hard to see him having much better of a week; New England quarterback Matt Cassel likely won't throw 51 attempt s again, and Watson's targets have been inconsistent all year - he had just two in Week 10. On the other side of that Thursday night matchup was the Jets' Dustin Keller. The rookie tight end appears to have turned the corner in his last two games, catching 14 passes for 194 yards and one touchdown in those two outings. His targets in the offense climbed to 10 last week; they have now increased in two straight weeks. However, owners should temper their expectations. Keller is in his first year, and rookie tight ends are rarely a consistent option. Also, his production almost matched how often he was targeted, so there might not be a lot of room for improvement. One way to improve would be to increase the targets, but with wide receivers Laveranues Coles and Jerricho Cotchery among the other options, it might be tough for that to happen. Still, quarterback Brett Favre loves to look for his tight end as a checkdown receiver, and Keller was a first-round pick this past season. For th e second straight week, Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Matt Spaeth was the target of seven passes. However, his reign as the top pass-catching option for the team at the position could come to an end soon; tight end Heath Miller (ankle) might be able to return in time for their game Thursday, Nov. 20. With the increased targets for the tight ends over the last two weeks, this could be a promising sign for those owners who have Miller. Speaking of short-lived, the New Orleans Saints' Billy Miller didn't receive any targets in Week 11 after registering 16 in his previous two games. Miller filled in on 17 snaps at fullback, replacing the injured Mike Karney (knee). He had been filling in for the injury-slowed Jeremy Shockey (hernia) during those games, but it was Shockey who walked away from Week 11 with the majority of the targets. The former New York Giant was targeted eight times in Week 11. Considering his offensive talent and the talent surrounding him, Shockey could finally be ready to contribute positively to fantasy teams. However, if Miller doesn't have to block for the backfield next week, he could once again compete with Shockey. Stay tuned to this situation. Entering Week 11, the Cincinnati Bengals were surrendering just 30.3 receiving yards per game to opposing tight ends over the previous four weeks. The Philadelphia Eagles' L.J. Smith and Brent Celek performed above that average, combining for 40 yards, yet their targets suggested they should have done more. Smith and Celek received eight and six targets, respectively. Philly quarterback Donovan McNabb has made decent use of this position in the past, so there could be some fantasy value here. As always, these are just a select few of those targeted in Week 11.
Injury Status: Week 12

Couple of interesting tidbits before we get to the injury stuff. First off, can you believe Donovan McNabb didn't know the game could end in a tie? Huh. Where has he been? I'm not sure why McNabb would even admit this after the game. Seems kind of strange to us. Oh well. Also, ESPNs John Clayton is reporting Edgerrin James asked for his release from the Cardinals. The Cardinals denied the request, though. James wants to go somewhere and play. You can't blame him for wanting to play, but he could have picked a better time to make such a request. The Cardinals are in the midst of their best season in years and don't need any added distractions. James will continue to backup Tim Hightower until he is likely let go during the offseason. He'll eventually get his wish. Chad Ocho Cinco, WR, Bengals . ESPN is reporting Ocho Cinco will be deactivated for Thursday's game. Apparently, he broke a team rule. The Bengals should start Chris Henry in his place. Henry isn't a bad option for fantasy teams in a starting role, but he has a terrible matchup against a great Steelers defense.

Home Field Advantage: Week 12

I have been getting this question a lot, so I'll give you my view on the subject. Here is the question is some form: I don't like Brandon Jacob's schedule in the playoffs, but can trade him and get Larry Johnson, who has a very favorable playoff schedule. Do I make this trade? I'm having a great season, but want to do well in the playoffs . Alright, this isn't the exact question, but you get the idea. It is about trading away your proven players because you don't like their playoff schedule. Here is what I say - you have to get there first. If you are having a great season and piling up points in your league, why mess with a good thing? And if you make a move now for the playoffs, who is to say that doesn't impact the last part of your regular season. Maybe you drop a game or two at the end of the regular season and get a worse playoff seed.

Studs and Duds: Week 11

With the byes over, we had a full slate of games for the first time in several weeks. And Week 11 brought with it some of the best single game performances of the season. We had a quarterback nearly get 500 total yards of offense, two running backs rush for more than 140 yards and two receivers top 150 yards (and they were on the same team). The big games led to some big scores for fantasy teams this week. The weather is getting colder, so that usually means a little more emphasis on the ground game. Week 11 was no exception to that theory. We had 11 backs break the 100-yard mark, which is a very high total for the way this season has been going. On the flip side, there were just five passers that topped the 300-yard mark, which is a low number compared to past weeks. But the good news was there were a 400-yard passer and another guy just below 400 yards (395). The quarterback spot still produced a lot of points for some teams.

Weekend Update: Week 11

You want to know the best news about Week 11? No more byes. Yes, the dreaded byes are all over. We are getting to crunch time now for fantasy teams with a lot on the line each game for the next few weeks. Believe it or not, some fantasy teams can clinch playoff spots this week. So hopefully your team is healthy and clicking for the stretch run. Redskins running back Clinton Portis remains a game-time decision for Week 11. But the Redskins did reveal that if Portis plays, it will be in a limited role. He won't get a ton of carries if his sore knee allows him to play. So for fantasy purposes, Portis isn't a great play because even if he plays, eh won't get much work. Go with safer options this week. As for the Redskins running back starter for this week, it looks like Ladell Betts will be healthy enough to start. He practiced again on Friday and is just listed as probable on the Injury Report. Betts should be fine to play and might not be a bad flex play if you are looking for running back help. We wouldn't count on him for anything more than that, though.
